From the Field Ledger of Acquisitions, Volume XII, compiled by the Merchant Consortium of Valdrek’s Crossing, entry dated the 14th day of the Amber Moon:
“Let it be noted for the benefit of any fool who comes after us: the Spindle of Orun Dask does not sit in a vault, does not rest on a plinth, and has never once been carried out of the Hollow Mountain by anyone who went in specifically to carry it out. Three expeditions. Three returns with empty hands and full nightmares. The Spindle is not lost. It is waiting. For what, or for whom, the Consortium has elected to stop asking. This file is hereby closed.”
The ledger entry is unsigned. The ink is slightly smeared, as though the writer’s hand was trembling, or perhaps simply in a hurry to be done.

Miriam Lockhart reads the entry for the seventh time by the light of a brass lantern she built herself, its clockwork wick-adjuster ticking softly in the silence of her rented room above the Valdrek’s Crossing tannery. The smell of cured hide seeps through the floorboards, thick and animal and strangely comforting, because it is the smell of ordinary human industry, and ordinary human industry is something she understands. She is thirty-one years old, trained in structural cartography at the Gearhammer School of Applied Acquisition — a discipline that sounds far more academic than it is, since “applied acquisition” is the polite term the school uses for “finding things other people have given up on and bringing them home in one piece.” She has recovered a collapsed bridge mechanism from beneath forty feet of floodwater. She has extracted a sealed alchemical furnace from a building that was actively on fire at the time. She is not easily frightened. She reads the entry an eighth time. She folds the ledger carefully, tucks it into the inner pocket of her oilskin coat, and blows out the lantern. In the darkness, the clockwork wick-adjuster ticks on for a few more seconds, then winds down to silence.
She leaves before first light.
The Hollow Mountain is not, technically, a mountain. It is a basalt formation roughly three hundred feet high, rising from the eastern edge of the Greyfen Marshes like a fist pushed up through the mud, and it is hollow in the way that a cast-iron bell is hollow: structurally, intentionally, magnificently so. Miriam knows this because she has read every surveyor’s note the Consortium ever filed, and because she has her own theories about how the interior chamber was formed, theories involving volcanic gas pockets and a very specific grade of mineral-rich groundwater that, over centuries, dissolves basalt from the inside out at a rate of approximately one inch per decade. She has run the numbers. The chamber at the mountain’s core would have reached its current dimensions roughly four thousand years ago, which is, not coincidentally, also roughly when the oldest legends about the Spindle begin. She finds this satisfying in the way that a gear tooth finding its matching groove is satisfying: not beautiful, exactly, but correct. The marsh stretches around her as she walks the stone-chip path that the Consortium’s three previous expeditions presumably also walked, and it is extraordinary in its own grey, sodden way. Reed beds rise six feet tall on either side, their heads gone to seed and trailing silver threads in the morning mist. The water between them is perfectly still and the color of old pewter, and small dark birds move through the reeds without disturbing them, as though the birds are thoughts the marsh is having quietly to itself. Miriam’s boots are waterproofed with a compound of her own formulation — rendered tallow, pine resin, and a proprietary binding agent she has never written down because she does not entirely trust paper — and they make a soft, deliberate sound on the wet stone with each step, a sound that is somehow both reassuring and very, very small against the vast grey quiet of the Greyfen.
She reaches the mountain’s base as the mist begins to thin.
