Gold Light Through the Shutters

Nandini felt the ache shift. Not gone — she didn’t think it would be gone for a while, that particular kind of ache, the one that comes from realizing you have been circling something important for longer than you knew. But it shifted. Made room.
“I read the part about Earl,” she said.
Marcus smiled, just slightly. “Earl needed someone.”
“You noticed.”
“I always notice.”
She breathed. Outside, the trumpet resolved into something warmer, and she was aware of him standing close, and of the letter in her hand, and of the particular quality of this afternoon light that made everything in the French Quarter look like it had already been remembered.
She reached out and straightened his collar. It was a small thing, the kind of thing she had done before — casually, without thinking, the way you touch someone you are comfortable with. But she did it slowly this time, and she did not step back when she was done.
“I have to go to this wedding,” she said again. Softer now.
“You do.”
“And when I come back—”
“I’ll be here,” Marcus said. Simple. No performance in it.
She nodded. Tucked the letter into her pocket. Walked toward the back door, and then stopped with her hand on the frame and looked back at him — at the bar, the ceiling fan, the saxophone clock, the man standing in the middle of it all looking at her like she was the note the trumpet had been searching for.
“Marcus.”
“Yeah.”
“Don’t put anything else in the record.”
He laughed — a real one, low and surprised — and she carried it with her out into the gold New Orleans afternoon, into the heat and the trumpet and the city that always smelled like music just about to begin.
