The space beyond the door is not dark, which surprises Camila. She had expected dark. Instead, the light is the colour of a sky before weather, a flat silver-grey that comes from everywhere and nowhere and illuminates without warmth. She is standing on a cobbled street. The cobbles are a deep blue-black stone she has never seen before, and they are perfectly preserved, which is strange because everything else — the buildings on either side, the remains of what might once have been market stalls, the shell of a fountain in the square ahead — has the quality of long abandonment, of a place where time did not stop but simply lost interest. The air is cold and tastes of copper. Camila looks back. The door stands behind her in nothing — no wall, no frame, just the door standing in the open street, and through it she can see the lamp-lit corridor of the Archive, the familiar water stains, the bend toward the reading room. She could step back through. She is aware of this with the same clarity with which she is aware of her own heartbeat.
She does not step back through.
She hears footsteps on the cobbles, and then she sees the figure coming across the square toward her, holding a lamp, and she understands immediately that this is not a human being. The figure is tall — taller than any person Camila has met — and the quality of her skin in the grey light is something between silver and blue, luminescent in a way that has nothing to do with the lamp she carries. Her ears are long and swept back, her eyes amber and unblinking in their focus, and she moves with the deliberate economy of someone who has learned not to waste motion in a place where everything costs effort. She is wearing layers of dark cloth, practical and worn, and around her neck is a copper instrument on a chain that swings slightly as she walks. She stops ten feet from Camila and looks at her with those amber eyes, and the look is not threatening. It is the look of someone who has been waiting for a very long time and is not yet sure whether to believe the waiting is over.
“You came through,” Vaelith says. Her voice is low and careful, accented in a way that suggests a language beneath the language, a grammar that works differently.
“I did,” Camila says. And then, because eleven years of cataloguing manuscripts has given her the habit of precision: “I don’t know why.”
Vaelith is quiet for a moment. The lamp between them makes a small island of yellow in the grey. “I do,” she says. “The door needed an anchor on the other side. A person. Someone who had held a place still long enough that the place remembered them — who had given so much of themselves to a location that the location carried their weight. The Archive remembered you. It is why the door opened there, and not somewhere else.” She pauses. “I am sorry. I know that is a strange thing to be told about yourself.”
Camila thinks about the corridor. The lamp. The water stains she has walked past eleven thousand times. She thinks about Vestibule, old and imperious in her small flat. She thinks about the thesis she never finished and the life she never went back to and the way she has spent eleven years being very still and calling it peace. “No,” she says slowly. “It isn’t strange. It’s just true.”
