The Ice That Spoke First

The ice, according to the instruments, had been silent.

I looked at the data for a long time. I am a technical person. I believe in instruments. I have spent sixteen years making decisions based on measurable evidence because measurable evidence was what kept people alive.

I do not have an explanation for what I heard. I have several hypotheses — a localised vibration below the sensor’s detection threshold, a sound carried through the ice from Kasper’s movement in the water below, a perceptual experience generated by sixteen years of trained attention to ice acoustics in a moment of high cognitive load. Any of these could be correct. None of them feel quite right when I am honest with myself about what the sound was like.

It was low, and deliberate, and it had a pattern. Slow, then fast, then slow. Like breathing. Like something below the surface of the ice, drawing breath in the cold and the dark, making what noise it could with what it had.

Kasper was discharged three weeks after the rescue. His family sent a card to our team. His parents wrote the expected things, the things parents wrote in those circumstances, and I was glad to read them. At the bottom, in handwriting that was shaky in the way of someone who had recently been very cold for a very long time, Kasper had added a line of his own.

It said: I heard someone talking through the ice before you came. I don’t know who it was. I kept still because they told me to.

I have read that line many times.

I have not found a way to put it in my incident report.

But I have not forgotten the sound, and I have not stopped thinking about what Kasper heard, and I am no longer entirely certain that what guided me across Lake Harro that morning was only my training.
