I should tell you how it ended before I explain how it began.
Belen was the one who said it — those words, that framing — when she recounted the weekend to the institute’s ethics board three weeks later. She said it because she had understood, standing in that third-floor room, that she had been narrating the weekend to herself all along. Processing. Constructing the story in real time, searching for the shape of it, the arc, the protagonist.
She had never once considered that the narrator was not one of them.
The study was real. The findings were published, eventually, in a journal that redacted the names of all participants. The lead researcher’s name appeared on the paper as P. Sundqvist.
The calls, the ethics board concluded, had been technically legal — automated systems, synthesized voices, no direct impersonation in a criminal sense. A gray area, they said.
Mervin resigned from the institute the following spring. Emilio requested a transfer. Wenjie published her own paper, a response, in the same journal — about the ethics of studying people who study people, and the particular cruelty of using someone’s own voice to unsettle them.
Belen kept the call log on her phone for a long time. The nine-second incoming call, her own number as the source. She looked at it sometimes the way you look at a scar — not to remember the wound, but to confirm the skin has closed.
I did not sleep that first night.
Petra wrote that line in the study’s appendix, as an example of how observer-narrators internalize the events they witness. She did not explain who the narrator was. The ambiguity, she noted, was intentional.
It always had been.
