The gas gauge had been on empty for twenty miles when Mara finally saw the exit sign. She pulled off the highway without thinking, desperate, grateful — and completely unaware that she had just made the worst decision of her life.
The road was narrow and unmarked, cutting through flat farmland under a sky the color of a bruise. No houses. No lights. Just cracked asphalt stretching ahead like a scar across the earth. Mara told herself it was fine. There had to be a town somewhere. There always was.
She drove for ten minutes before she saw the green highway sign again. Exit 44. The same one she had just taken. She slowed the car, staring at it. The sign was identical — same rusted bracket, same faded lettering, same crack running through the number four. She had not turned around. She was certain of that.
Mara pulled over and checked her phone. No signal. The map app showed a gray void where she was supposed to be, as if the road did not exist at all. She took a breath, put the car in drive, and kept going. There was a logical explanation. There always was.
Five minutes later, the sign appeared again. Exit 44.
She stopped the car in the middle of the road. Her hands were shaking, but her mind was sharp. She was a detective — twelve years on the force, three years as an investigator for the state prosecutor’s office. She did not believe in impossible things. She believed in evidence.
Mara got out of the car. The air was warm and completely still. She walked to the sign and pressed her palm flat against the metal. Real. Solid. She pulled out her keys and scratched a small X into the lower corner of the post. Then she got back in the car and drove.
Six minutes. The sign came into view. She was already slowing before she reached it. She stepped out and looked at the post. The X was there, fresh and bright against the rusted metal.
Her mouth went dry.
She had not turned. She had not looped. The road was straight. She could see it stretching in both directions, flat and featureless, with no curves, no intersections, no possible way to circle back. And yet here she was. Again.
Mara forced herself to think like an investigator. Someone was doing this. That was the only rational answer. Someone had engineered this — mirrors, a second sign, a road design that created an optical illusion of straight travel while actually curving back. It was elaborate. It was deliberate. And it meant someone wanted drivers to stay here.
She thought about the case she was carrying in the backseat. The files. Three months of evidence against a man named Carver Doyle — a logistics contractor with connections to at least four missing persons cases across two states. She was driving those files to the capital tomorrow morning. She was the only person outside the prosecutor’s office who knew what was in them.
Her blood went cold.
Mara reached for her phone again. Still no signal. She got back in the car and this time she drove faster, watching the odometer. One mile. Two miles. She counted every tenth. At three point four miles, she saw headlights in her rearview mirror. A truck, moving slow. Too slow for a driver just passing through.
She pressed the accelerator. The truck matched her speed.
At four miles, the exit sign appeared again. She did not stop this time. She blew past it, eyes forward, foot down. The truck stayed with her. At six miles, another sign. At eight miles, another. Each one identical. Each one impossible.
Then she noticed something she had missed before. A dirt track, barely visible, branching off to the left just before each sign. She had been so focused on the sign itself that she had never looked left. She had been following the road she was given, not looking for another one.
She waited. Watched the odometer. When the next sign appeared, she yanked the wheel left and hit the dirt track hard, the car shuddering over loose gravel. The truck behind her hesitated — she saw the headlights slow — and then it followed.
