The dirt track ran for half a mile before opening onto a two-lane county road. A real road. A gas station sat at the intersection, its lights burning white and clean against the dark. Mara pulled in, jumped out, and ran inside before the truck could reach her.
The attendant was a teenager with headphones around his neck. He looked startled. Mara badged him — old habit — and asked to use the landline. He handed it over without a word.
She called the prosecutor’s office. It rang four times before someone picked up. She recognized the voice immediately. Marcus Hale, the lead prosecutor. The man who had hired her. The man who was the only other person who knew her route.
He sounded surprised to hear from her. Too surprised. The kind of surprised that was practiced.
Mara kept her voice level. She told him she had been delayed. Car trouble. She would deliver the files in the morning. He told her to be careful on the roads. She said she would.
She hung up and stood very still for a moment.
Then she looked out the window. The truck was parked at the edge of the lot, engine running, headlights off. Waiting. The driver had not come inside. They were not here for gas.
Mara asked the attendant if there was a sheriff’s office nearby. He said six miles east. She asked if she could leave her car here for an hour. He shrugged and said sure.
She went out the back door, into the dark, and started walking east. She left the files locked in the trunk. She left her phone on the counter inside, still broadcasting its location to anyone who might be tracking it.
The road behind her was quiet. The road ahead was unknown.
But for the first time in an hour, she was the one choosing which way to go.
She did not look back. Looking back, she had learned tonight, only ever brought you to the same place.
