The next three minutes are the kind of time that stretches. Milan’s hands move through the node’s interface with controlled urgency — not rushing, because rushing makes errors, and an error here means the signal gets rejected rather than injected. He is introducing a recursive loop into PANOPTICON-1 probability weighting function, a self-referencing calculation that will cause the system to increasingly overweight its own prior outputs until the scores become noise. Weronika designed the logic. Milan is executing it. The rest of us are here because none of us was willing to let two people do this alone.
The routing hardware changes pitch. A low hum rises a half-step.
“Enforcement signal,” Weronika says from the door. Her voice is steady. “Two units. Northern approach. Ninety seconds.”
“Done,” Milan says.
He closes the access panel. His hands are shaking now, slightly, the shake he was holding back with the talking. He looks at the node’s status indicator. It still shows green. The signal is in.
We go out the south face, which is not the way we came, and which puts us into a part of the dead zone with no mapped exit route. Weronika consults nothing — she carries the map in her head now, after three years of drawing it. She leads us through two collapsed buildings, through a gap in a retaining wall, and into a drainage channel that runs east beneath the ruins.
Behind us, we hear the enforcement units enter the relay building. We hear the sounds that follow — equipment being accessed, signals being run. We do not stop.
In the drainage channel, knee-deep in cold, chemical-sweet water, Milan makes a sound that might be a laugh.
“It’s running,” he says. “The loop is running.”
Dinesh looks at him. “They’ll find us eventually. After the recalibration.”
“Yes,” Milan says.
Weronika doesn’t look back. She is already moving east, deeper into the dead zone, where the sensors don’t reach and the maps are still being drawn.
We lost Milan at the relay building — not to the enforcement units, but to the decision he made to stay an extra forty seconds to verify the signal propagation, which is why the units were close enough to register his collar at full strength before he could move. He is in Compact custody now. We know this. He knew the probability when he stayed.
The window is open. Forty-eight hours, maybe seventy-two. Across the city grid, PANOPTICON-1 is flagging everything and nothing, and the enforcement units are receiving alerts they cannot process, and people are moving in ways they have not been able to move in two years. Whether that movement becomes something lasting — whether the window becomes a door — is not something the four of us, now three, can determine from a drainage channel in the dead zone.
But Weronika is still drawing. I am still keeping the record. And Dinesh, who remembers the city before PANOPTICON-1, is describing what it looked like, so I can write it down.
We gave the system a fault it will spend days trying to name. That is what we had. That is what we used.
