Every Morning, Without Meaning To

And now here she is, cold cup in hand, watching Viktor at the counter, and he turns — because of course he turns, because this is the kind of moment that insists on being met — and he sees her, and something moves across his face that she has never seen there before. Something open. Something careful and open at the same time, the way a door looks when it is just beginning to move.
He collects his espresso. He walks to the window. He sits down across from her, in the chair that has, without any formal arrangement, become his chair, and he puts his cup down, and he looks at her, and neither of them says anything for a long moment.
The rain has stopped. The flower stall outside is putting itself back together, buckets of peonies and ranunculus catching the thin morning light. A woman walks past with a baguette under her arm. The city continues, indifferent and beautiful.
Viktor reaches across the small table and wraps both hands around her cold cup — not taking it, just covering it, covering her hands beneath his — and the warmth moves through her like something long overdue.
They sit like that, in the window, while the morning opens around them.
