Elspeth left before noon. She did not say goodbye so much as she became absent, her bag gone from the doorway, the front door standing open onto the cold morning. I did not go after her. I sat at the kitchen table with the lantern between my hands — dark now, the reservoir dry, the wick burned to nothing — and I felt the cost of what I had done settle into me the way cold settles into a room after a fire goes out. I would not speak of this to anyone. That was the price. Not silence imposed from outside, not a curse of muteness — simply the knowledge, clear and absolute, that there were no words for what had happened that would not diminish it, no explanation I could offer that would not require the listener to carry something they hadn’t chosen to carry. My grandmother had known this. Every woman in my family who had held the lantern and set it down again had known this. I understood them now in a way I had not that morning, and the understanding was not comfortable, but it was real.
I packed the lantern last, wrapped in its dark cloth, tied with its cord. I put it in the crate with the painted dishes nobody had ever been allowed to eat from. I closed the house on a Friday afternoon with the sky going the color of old bronze and the wind coming in off the crossing with the smell of cold water and distance. I did not look back at the threshold. I did not need to. The lantern was dark, and the debt was paid, and the thing that had waited in the corner of my grandmother’s kitchen for eleven years — for my whole life, really — was gone, and I was the one who had gone to meet it instead of waiting for it to come to me.
That was the difference. That was the only difference. And it was enough.
