Who Inherits the Weight of a Sealed Flame?

The bargain was about choosing. Every woman in my line chose, when the box came to her, to keep carrying it. They could have come here. They could have returned it early, broken the term, faced whatever consequence that carried. They did not. They carried the warmth and the weight and the silence, and they passed it on, and not one of them explained why — because explanation would have been a kind of coercion. The choice had to be free.
Bozena gave it to me without explanation because she loved me.
They all did.
I stop in the middle of the Ashenveil Road, snow coming down around me, the empty box under my arm, and I stand there for a long moment in the cold that is new to me and the dark that is very old.
Then I keep walking.
The box is empty. The debt is paid. The flame is where it belongs.
And for the first time in twenty-six years — in six generations, maybe — my family is free.
I pull my coat tighter against the cold and I walk toward the lights of the town, which are warm and distant and entirely, blessedly, ordinary.
