“You are late,” it says. “They always are.”
I find my voice somewhere under the fear. “What are you?”
“A keeper of debts.” It tilts its head — that long, pale head — at an angle that should be unsettling and somehow is not. “Your grandmother’s grandmother made a bargain in this clearing. The flame was given into your bloodline for safekeeping. The runes were the signal. When they woke, the term ended.”
My hands tighten on the box. “What was the bargain?”
“Safekeeping,” it says again, as though the word is complete. “The flame inside that box would have burned this forest to the treeline and everything beyond it if it had been left without a vessel. Your ancestor agreed to carry it. Her line agreed to carry it. The carrying kept it contained.”
The box pulses against my palms. Hot. Urgent.
“And now?”
“Now it is time to return it.”
I look at the plinth. I look at the creature. I think about Bozena’s hands — dry, small, always slightly warm, even in winter. I think about my mother’s hands. I think about how neither of them ever complained of the cold.
I walk to the plinth.
The box should feel lighter as I lift it away from my body. It does not. It feels like setting down something I have been carrying for twenty-six years without knowing I was carrying it, which is different from light — it is a kind of vertigo, a sudden absence of pressure I had mistaken for ordinary weight.
I set it on the stone.
The runes flare — not violently, not explosively, but with the steady, releasing brightness of a door opened onto a sunlit room. The blackwood lid rises on its own, and what is inside is not fire in any shape I have a word for. It is a colour that lives between amber and gold, between solid and moving, a compressed radiance that breathes. It hangs above the open box for a moment, perfectly still.
Then it descends into the stone.
The plinth absorbs it the way dry earth absorbs rain — completely, without resistance, without a seam. The runes on the box go dark. The clearing’s shimmer fades. The snow keeps falling, ordinary now, cold and quiet.
I stand there holding an empty box.
The Veilkin has not moved. Its coal-light eyes are still on me.
“What happens to my family now?” I ask. “The warmth — we always ran warm. Even in winter. I thought it was just — I thought it was just how we were.”
“It was the flame,” it confirms. “Shared between bloodline and vessel. A side effect your ancestor did not anticipate.”
The cold hits me then. Properly. For the first time in my life, I think, I feel winter as it actually is — a presence with weight and intention, settling against my skin like something that has been waiting outside a locked door for a very long time.
I pull my coat tighter.
“Is it done?” I ask. “The debt — is it cleared?”
“The flame is returned. The bargain is honoured.” The Veilkin steps back toward the tree line. It moves the way it moved before, that lateral, jointless slide, and the dark between the trunks swallows it without ceremony. Its voice comes back one last time, already distant, already dissolving into the sound of wind in the high branches.
“Your ancestor was brave,” it says. “So were all the ones who carried it after. So are you.”
And then it is gone, and I am alone in the clearing with an empty box and a cold I have never felt before and a silence that is, at last, just silence.
I start walking back toward the Veil Bridge.
It takes me until I reach the road to understand the thing I have been circling since the Veilkin spoke.
Bozena said: do not open it until the runes wake.
She did not say: when the runes wake, go to the forest.
She did not say: find the clearing, find the plinth.
She said only the one thing — the minimum instruction, the last breadcrumb of a trail that had been laid down generations before either of us was born. And I followed it here anyway, as though the direction were already in me, as though the box itself were a compass and I were the needle.
Which means the bargain was never only about safekeeping.
