The Stranger’s Unspoken Draft

The garden was this. The attic. The cedar boxes. The thousands of unfinished lives she had tended with the same care she might have given to living things in soil. She had never told anyone — not the Archive’s board of patrons, not the occasional scholar who climbed the stairs to consult a manuscript, not herself, in so many words — that she did not complete the stories out of duty. She completed them because she loved them. Because each unfinished story was a person who had not yet been allowed to be done, and she could not bear to leave a person in that state. It was not craft. It was not profession. It was the thing she was for, in the way that a hammer is for striking and a gear is for turning, and she had spent fourteen years calling it work when it was something far more load-bearing than work.
She wrote the last line.
The garden was where she had always lived, and she had only just arrived.
The Loom accepted it. She felt the hum shift — from waiting to satisfied, from tension to the clean release of a mechanism completing its cycle. The feed-tray drew the page in. The amber-brass gears turned in their smallest, most precise rotation. A single sheet emerged from the output slot, printed in the Loom’s own typeface, which was unlike any typeface Verity had seen in any print-house in Aldenmere, being somehow both very old and very exact.
She read the completed line.
It was the same as what she had written. Word for word. The Loom had not corrected her.
For the first time in fourteen years, Verity Blackwood laughed out loud in the attic, alone, with no audience but the cedar boxes and the machine and whatever presence hummed quietly inside its gears — and the laugh rang through the archive like a bell struck at exactly the right angle.
