The Girl I Never Was

But the post was real. The photograph was real. And the scar above her left brow — she had always told people she got it falling off a bicycle at age seven. She had a clear memory of the fall, the gravel, her mother’s voice.
She called her mother at midnight.
‘Mom. The scar on my forehead. How did I get it?’
A pause that lasted exactly one second too long. ‘You fell off your bike, sweetheart. You know that.’
‘Where? What street?’
Another pause. ‘Maya, it’s midnight. Why are you—’
‘What street, Mom?’
Her mother’s voice, when it came, was careful in the way that voices are when they are choosing words. ‘Birch Lane. We were visiting friends. You were so little. You don’t remember.’
Birch Lane.
Maya sat up in the dark motel room and pressed the phone against her chest and breathed.
She drove home the next morning without going back to see Doris. She needed to think. She needed distance and light and her own familiar walls around her.
But when she got home and walked into the kitchen, the original photograph was gone from the counter where she had left it.
In its place was a child’s drawing — crayon on white paper, rough and simple — of a yellow house with a red door. And at the bottom, in uneven letters that no adult hand had written:
*I remember you.*
Maya stood in her kitchen for a long time, perfectly still, the drawing in her hands.
She had lived alone for two years. She had no children. The door had been locked when she left.
She thought about the post she didn’t remember making. The memory she didn’t remember living. The name written on the back of a photograph of her own face.
And she began to wonder — not whether someone was trying to make her believe she was Clara.
But whether some part of her had always been trying to remember.
