The Call From the Dead

Daniel had found it. All of it. He had built the entire case before they killed him.
Her own phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out. Unknown number this time.
‘You found it.’ A different voice. Calm. Professional. A woman’s voice. ‘Good. Now you understand why we couldn’t let him talk.’
Mara’s blood ran cold. ‘Who are you?’
‘Someone who wants the same thing you want. The files are real. The drive is encrypted, but the password is the date you and Daniel graduated the academy. He trusted you with everything. Even after he was gone.’
The line went dead again.
She stood very still in the dark warehouse, processing. The voice had known about the academy. Had known she would come alone. Had known exactly how to move her from point A to point B without a single wrong step.
She looked at the phone on the table. Daniel’s phone. She picked it up. It was real. Solid. Scratched on the back corner, exactly as she remembered.
Then she understood.
Daniel had not died by accident. But he had also not died unprepared. He had known they were coming for him. He had hidden the phone. He had arranged for someone he trusted to deliver it to her when the time was right, when the evidence was complete enough to be undeniable. The calls, the texts, the address — all of it was a dead man’s final investigation, handed off in the only way that would guarantee she would follow it.
He had used his own death as the hook, because he knew her well enough to know she would never let it go.
She copied the drive, pocketed both phones, and walked out of the warehouse into the cold night air.
She still didn’t know who the woman on the phone was. An ally. A setup. Someone playing both sides. The files could bring down half a dozen powerful people, or they could be the bait in a trap she had just walked into perfectly.
Mara Voss got in her car and sat with the weight of it.
Then she started the engine.
Some doors, once opened, only go one direction.
