“The problem,” the woman continued, her voice dropping just slightly, “is that you came back.”
Mara ran.
She hit the tree line before the woman had finished the sentence, crashing through the underbrush, branches raking her face and arms. She did not look back. She could hear footsteps on the gravel behind her, then the softer sound of someone entering the trees.
The forest in October was a tangle of deadfall and wet fern. Mara had spent six days in this terrain. She knew how to move through it. She dropped low, cut left along a dry creek bed she had crossed that morning, and used the sound of the wind in the canopy to cover her movement.
She pulled out her phone. One bar. She dialed 911, pressed the phone to her ear, and kept moving.
The call connected. She whispered her name, her location, the trailhead. The dispatcher asked her to repeat. She did, quieter, crouching behind a fallen cedar the width of a car.
She waited. The forest was silent except for the wind.
Twenty minutes later, she heard tires on gravel. Then radio static. Then voices. She moved toward the sound and emerged from the tree line to find two sheriff’s vehicles and the ranger from the checkpoint standing beside her truck.
The woman in the green jacket was gone.
The ranger looked at Mara with the same careful expression as before. “Ms. Voss. We got your call.” He glanced at his notepad. “We also got a call about twenty minutes before yours. From a woman who said she was you. Said a stranger had approached her at the trailhead and threatened her.”
Mara stared at him.
“She gave us your name, your plate number, your permit ID. Said the stranger was wearing a jacket identical to hers.” He paused. “We sent a unit to your Seattle address. A woman matching your description let them in. She had ID. She had a key.”
The cold that moved through Mara then had nothing to do with the October air.
“She’s been there eleven days,” Mara said. “She told me.”
The ranger nodded slowly. “The unit is holding her for questioning. But Ms. Voss —” He stopped. Chose his words. “She’s been very cooperative. And she knew things. About the apartment. About you.”
He did not finish the sentence. He did not need to.
Mara understood the shape of what had been built around her. Eleven days of a life lived in her name, a paper trail, a neighbor who had seen a familiar face coming and going, a digital footprint that belonged to someone else now. And a story already filed with the police: a stranger at the trailhead, threatening, wearing the same jacket.
Two women. Same name. Same jacket. Same face, almost.
Only one of them had been home for eleven days.
Mara looked at the ranger. She looked at the trees where the woman had disappeared. She thought about the keys, sliding so easily from that jacket pocket. She thought about how long it takes to become someone, and how much shorter a time it takes to be erased.
“I want to call my emergency contact,” she said.
The ranger checked his notepad again. “We already reached her. She said she’s been talking to you all week.”
Mara had not called anyone in six days.
She had not called anyone at all.
