She pulled her laptop from her bag and connected to the building’s guest Wi-Fi. It worked. Of course it worked. They wanted her to have internet access. They wanted her to panic and email someone, wanted a digital record of her reaching out, something that could later be framed as coordination, as conspiracy.
She did not email anyone.
Instead, she opened her audit software and began to work. If she was going to be on camera in this room with these documents, she was going to be on camera doing exactly what her court order permitted her to do. She photographed the outside of each file folder without opening them, logging serial numbers, documenting the cabinet, the lock, the room. She photographed the door with no handle. She photographed the camera in the ceiling. She photographed the window and the street below with a timestamp running in the corner of her screen.
She was building a record. Her record. One that told a different story than the one they were trying to write for her.
At 7:58, she heard footsteps in the hallway. Then voices. Then silence.
The door opened from the outside. A man she did not recognize stood in the frame. Fifties, expensive suit, a smile that had been rehearsed too many times to look natural.
‘Ms. Reyes,’ he said. ‘I hope you haven’t been waiting long.’
He looked at the open filing cabinet. His smile did not change, but something behind his eyes did.
‘I documented everything,’ she said quietly. ‘The room. The door. The camera. The timestamp on my entry. All of it. Automatically uploaded to a secure server the moment I connected to your Wi-Fi.’
She watched him understand what that meant.
‘I’d like to leave now,’ she said.
He stepped aside. She walked past him without looking back, her bag over her shoulder, her laptop closed under her arm.
In the elevator, she finally exhaled. She pressed the lobby button and watched the floor numbers count down. She had the files. She had the record. She had survived the room.
But as the elevator doors opened to the marble lobby, one thought would not leave her alone.
Someone inside the investigation had told them she was coming this morning. Someone she trusted. Someone with access to her schedule, her court order, her case notes.
She stepped out into the cold Seattle morning and kept walking.
Behind her, the building rose silent and glass-faced into the fog.
She did not look back. But she started making a list.
