She had not put him away. That was what she understood now, sitting in the quiet. She had not processed and moved on the way people always said children were resilient enough to do. She had done something more absolute than that. She had erased him—completely, cleanly, with the thoroughness of someone who had no choice, because the alternative was carrying the absence of him through every year that followed, and she had been nine years old and there had been no room for that.
The photograph had not revealed a mystery about the boy. It had revealed something about her. About the specific and terrible efficiency of her own grief.
She had loved him. That was the part she had buried deepest.
Not the fact of his disappearance. Not the loss. The love itself.
Sigrid sets the photograph down on the table. She doesn’t put it back in the box. She leaves it there, face up, Tobias looking at the camera with his almost-smile, her seven-year-old hand reaching toward something she can no longer remember reaching for.
She sits with him for a while. It seems like the least she can do.
Outside, the light shifts. The afternoon folds quietly into evening, and the apartment fills with the kind of stillness that isn’t emptiness—the kind that comes when something long-sealed is finally allowed to breathe.
