Mara pressed her back against the headboard. Her mind was running through every rational explanation and finding the edges of each one, the places where they didn’t hold. A hacker who somehow knew about the clinic. A prank that required information no one had. A dream — but she had pinched her own arm twice already and the small red mark was still there.
‘What do you mean that’s the only way this works?’ she typed.
A long pause. Then: ‘I don’t have much time to explain. The signal or whatever this is — it doesn’t last. I found a way to reach you before the call. Before the words. I don’t fully understand it either. But the scan error is real. Promise me you’ll ask.’
Mara was crying without realizing it. Not from fear, exactly. From something bigger and harder to name.
‘Why can’t you just tell me when you call?’ she typed.
‘Because you won’t believe me then. You’ll think I’m guessing. You need to know I knew before.’
She sat with that for a long moment. The logic of it was strange and circular and somehow, in the 4 AM silence, it made a terrible kind of sense.
‘Okay,’ she typed. ‘I promise.’
No more messages came.
She didn’t sleep. She watched the sky outside her window go from black to grey to the pale, uncertain blue of early morning. At 8:23 AM, her phone rang. Dani’s name on the screen.
Mara answered on the first ring.
‘Hey,’ Dani said. Her voice was normal. Warm. Slightly distracted, like she was making coffee. ‘I’ve been thinking about you. How did the appointment go?’
Mara’s throat tightened. ‘How did you know I had an appointment?’
A small pause. ‘Mom mentioned something last week. I wasn’t sure if it was happening yet. Are you okay?’
So Dani didn’t know. Not yet. She hadn’t sent the messages. She was calling now, just as the messages had said she would, and she had no memory of anything that had happened in the night.
Mara looked at her phone screen, at the thread of impossible messages sitting there in blue and grey bubbles.
‘I need to ask you something,’ Mara said carefully. ‘The scan from yesterday. Is there any chance the doctor could have missed something?’
Another pause, longer this time. Dani was a radiologist.
‘What do you mean? What did they tell you?’
‘Just — if I asked for a second image, a second review, would that be strange?’
She heard Dani set something down. Her voice shifted. ‘Mara. Ask. Always ask. You should always ask for a second image. That’s not strange at all. That’s just smart.’ A beat. ‘Is there something you’re not telling me?’
Mara stared at the messages on her screen. The ones sent before they were sent. The ones that knew before anyone knew.
‘I’ll explain everything,’ she said. ‘But first I need to call the clinic.’
She hung up and sat very still for a moment. Outside, the city was waking up, ordinary and unhurried. A bus went past. Someone’s dog barked twice and went quiet.
She opened the message thread one more time. All the messages were still there. Timestamped. Real.
Except now, at the very bottom, a final message had appeared. One she hadn’t seen before. Sent at 8:24 AM — one minute ago, while she had been on the phone.
It said: ‘You believed me. Good. That’s all I needed to know.’
Mara read it twice. Then she looked at the timestamp again.
8:24 AM.
The call with Dani had ended at 8:24 AM.
Whoever — or whatever — had been sending the messages had been watching in real time. Had known the exact moment she made her choice.
She called the clinic. She asked for the second image.
Three days later, the clinic called her back. There had been an error on the first scan. A shadow, missed on the initial read. Caught now. Early enough to matter.
Mara never found an explanation for the messages. She checked the thread a hundred times. She showed it to Dani, who went pale and said nothing for a very long time.
The messages stayed in the thread. They didn’t disappear, the way strange things in stories are supposed to disappear.
They just sat there, quiet and permanent, like a door that had been opened from the other side.
