Everything Went Quiet at Meridian Outpost

Pinnock stepped close. “It showed us how to listen. The ridge carries the signal — the whole ridge is part of it. We’ve been walking through its outer edges since day one.” She looked at Wenjie steadily. “It knew we were here before we knew we’d landed.”
That was when Wenjie understood.
She turned slowly. Not toward the formation. Away from it — toward the open flat, toward the distant glint of the drop-shuttle, toward everything she had walked through since arrival. The dust that had felt watched. The sensors that had gone dark in a specific pattern, not randomly but in a line, a path, her path, from the shuttle to the outpost to here.
It had not been watching Pinnock.
It had been watching her.
The transmission Pinnock had sent — the one that brought the Ardent, that brought Wenjie specifically — had not been cut off by signal degradation. The formation had ended it deliberately, at the precise word it chose, to send the precise message it intended: that there was something here worth coming to see. It had read the colony’s communication logs. It had identified chain of command. It had known that a terminated transmission from a silent outpost would bring a soldier rather than a diplomat, a scout rather than a committee.
It had wanted someone who would look at the sky first.
Wenjie stood in the red dust of Kessel Drift, the vast alien intelligence rippling with quiet light behind her, and she thought about the mug on the bench, upright, precise, waiting. A marker. A greeting. Everything placed exactly as intended.
“What does it want?” she said.
Pinnock almost smiled. “To talk. It’s been alone here for a very long time. It chose you, Lieutenant. It’s been choosing you since before we knew it existed.”
The light shifted. The ground hummed. And Wenjie Yeon, carbine slung and hands open, took one step toward the ridge.
