And then I met Ozrenth.
I do not know if Ozrenth is a name or a designation or simply the closest phonetic approximation of a sound I heard in a corridor that had no sound in it. But that is what I will call the entity, because it is what came to me when I tried to hold the memory of the encounter in a shape I could carry.
Ozrenth was tall — perhaps three meters — and bilaterally symmetrical in the way that suggested a similar evolutionary logic to my own, but the details were entirely different. Four arms, each jointed twice, each ending in a cluster of thin digits that moved independently and constantly, like sea anemone fronds in a current. A torso that was broader at the base than the shoulders, giving a low, stable silhouette. A head — if that is the right word — that was smooth and ovoid, with no visible eyes, but with a wide, horizontal ridge across the front that I came to understand was the sensory organ: it perceived light and heat and pressure all at once, in a way that made the concept of “looking” at something very different from what I know. The skin — the outer surface — was the same material as the walls: translucent, with that quality of depth, that amber warmth seeping through it from within.
Ozrenth did not speak. What happened instead was something I cannot fully describe. A pressure in the air. A shift in the light. And then, in my own mind, in my own voice, a sentence that I am certain I did not generate myself:
You were the first one to come toward us.
I stood very still. I said, aloud, into the amber air: “The others couldn’t see you.”
The light shifted. The pressure changed. My own voice again, in my head:
We know. We have been adjusting.
Thread One — The Analyst
At 14:02, the mass-shadow moved for the first time. Not away — toward Meridian Platform Nine. Slowly, with the deliberate patience of something that had been waiting a long time and had now decided the waiting was done.
The security division people were on their feet. Yorvane was on the line. The hub was filling with voices.
Chioma was not listening to any of them.
She was watching the second reading — human-scale, V. Elund — moving with the station. Not trapped. Moving alongside it, in the same direction, at the same speed.
Not a prisoner. A messenger.
She thought about four years of anomaly reports that no one read before Tuesday. She thought about the passive array that only caught things incidentally, in the peripheral vision of its primary function. She thought about a structure four kilometers long that had been sitting two hundred meters from a relay buoy for eleven days, doing nothing but waiting, and she understood — with the particular clarity that only comes when something enormous and strange turns out to be, at its core, very simple — that this was not a threat.
It was an introduction.
The station had been drifting off every registered flight path for eleven days, not because it was lost, but because it was looking for the right angle. The right moment. The right person to look up from their screen at 03:12 in the morning and feel, in the particular stillness of a quiet hub, that they were being watched back.
Chioma pressed her palm flat against the screen, against the shape of the mass-shadow moving slowly through the dark toward her, and said, very quietly, to no one in particular:
“I see you.”
I have been logging this for eleven days. My name is Vasco Elund. I am thirty-one years old. I have a scar above my left eyebrow and a habit of humming when I work.
I am coming home. I am not coming home alone.
I think it is going to be all right.
