Every Second You Owe Us

They deployed back together, side by side, the pod reassembling itself around them in a rush of amber light and the smell of ozone. Renata hit the release on her harness and stepped free, and the first thing she did was pull up the ITRO filing on Jun’s tablet and screenshot it to her personal device.
The second thing she did was sit down on the floor of the pod, because her legs had decided they were finished.
The audit process would take months. Vantara would fight it. They had lawyers who had spent decades building the architecture of these contracts, and they would not dismantle them easily or quietly. Renata would spend a significant portion of the next year in legal proceedings, and she would likely never work in temporal logistics again, and there would be days when she would wonder if the message under the door had actually changed anything, or if her younger self would read it and discard it as a prank.
But the filing existed. The loophole was on record. And for the first time in six years, the ledger had stopped counting.
That 0.003-second drift on her anchor needle — she understood it now. A tiny error in Vantara’s calibration software, one she’d reported and they’d dismissed, that had quietly been adding fractions of seconds to her debt total every insertion. Small enough to be invisible. Large enough, across six years, to add up to something they could use.
She had the error logs. She had the filing. She had Jun, who had chosen his direction at the fork.
It wasn’t clean. It wasn’t over. But the needle was at zero, and this time, it was going to stay there.
