Before the Day We Haven’t Reached

The vault smelled of hot metal and mineral water and something older beneath both, a smell like the inside of a stone that had never been opened. The amber characters on Britta’s wrist device were still when she watched them go in. For the first time since they’d met her, they stopped scrolling.
Salvador and Bridie completed the override in thirty-one seconds. The containment held.
Salvador came out. He walked slowly, leaning on the relay post, and Niamh was there before he reached it. His shielding had degraded faster than projected — Emiliano would spend the next three weeks managing the exposure, and the long-term cost was something they didn’t speak about yet because there was no point speaking about it yet.
Bridie didn’t come out.
They held a gathering for her that evening, in the bunker, with people from the other shelter clusters who didn’t fully understand what had happened but understood enough. Isak spoke. Niamh lit the candles they’d been saving for something worth saving them for.
Britta stood at the edge of the gathering, her wrist bare. The device was gone. She’d removed it after they came back from the vault, and no one had asked her what she’d done with it, because there were more immediate things to attend to, and because some of them suspected they didn’t want to know the answer.
Later, when the others were sleeping, Isak found her sitting by the periscope in the dark.
“Was this the one?” he asked. “The attempt that worked?”
She was quiet for a moment. “The aquifer is safe. The basin survives.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
She turned to look at him. In the dark, her pale eyes caught the faint light from the instrument panel, and what he saw in them was not relief, exactly, but something that had lived beside grief for long enough to have taken on its shape.
“No,” she said. “It’s not what you asked.”
She didn’t answer. But she stayed until morning, which felt, in its own quiet way, like something close to an answer.
