Amber Silk and Sea Glass

The orchestra plays something slow. Pooja and Sergei are the only ones on the floor for the first minute, and then Auntie Mira drags an unwilling cousin out, and then it is general and warm and people are swaying in pairs near the terrace doors.
Kavita steps outside.
The air off the lake is cool now, carrying pine and water and something faintly sweet she can’t name. The lanterns sway. The music reaches her muffled and soft.
She hears him come out behind her.
She doesn’t turn around.
“I didn’t know how to stay,” Tomasz says. His voice is low. “Ten years ago. I didn’t know how to ask you to wait, and I didn’t know how to go without — I handled it badly. I know that.”
She watches the lake. A lantern drifts on the current below the terrace wall.
“You left a note,” she says.
“I know.”
“Six words.”
“I know.” He exhales. “Kavita.”
She turns then. He is close — closer than she registered — and he looks tired in the way that has nothing to do with the hour, the particular tiredness of someone who has been carrying something a long time.
She knows that tiredness. She has worn it herself.
The music drifts through the glass doors. Inside, Pooja is dancing with her eyes closed, her head on Sergei’s shoulder, entirely elsewhere.
Kavita turns back toward the water.
She takes one step away.
Tomasz catches her hand.
He doesn’t say anything. Neither does she.
The lanterns sway over the lake. The water is dark and still and very wide. His hand is warm around hers, careful, like a question he already knows the answer to but is asking anyway.
She doesn’t pull away.
Above them, the chalet glows. Inside, someone laughs. The music plays on.
And the lake holds all of it — the ten years, the note, the distance — and gives nothing back.
