They rode for the Thornwell before dawn, in the kind of darkness that feels personal, as though it has specifically arrived for you. The Ashfen marshes began two miles north of Cressmark, and the road into them was not a road so much as a shared agreement between travelers that certain patches of ground were marginally more solid than others. The horses did not like it. Sable’s horse in particular kept stopping, ears flat, nostrils flaring at something the riders could not smell.
“Leave it,” Sable said softly to the animal, each time. It listened, which impressed Dimitris more than he showed.
Gunnar navigated by the maps and by something else, some instinct that cartographers develop over years of walking ground that doesn’t want to be mapped. He would hold up a hand, they would stop, he would tilt his head and listen to the marsh, and then he would point slightly left or slightly right of where they’d been heading. It added time. It kept them on solid ground. Dimitris found himself grateful for both.
Rafael rode beside Dimitris and said nothing for a long stretch, which was not like him. Rafael was a man who filled silence with words the way some people filled rooms with furniture—out of habit, out of a mild horror of empty space. His quiet now felt like a symptom.
“You think she found something,” Dimitris said. Not a question.
“I think she found the same thing I found,” Rafael said. “And I think whoever’s been managing the Stone’s decline didn’t want it found.” He paused. “The Concordat’s records show that the Binding Stone was renewed every generation. A ritual, performed by appointed witches. The last renewal was forty-one years ago.”
“The forty-third year,” Dimitris said slowly. “Halina’s letter. She dated it to the forty-third year of the Concordat.”
“The Stone should have been renewed two years ago,” Rafael said. “It wasn’t. And the records of the appointed witches for this generation have been removed from the Sanctum archive. Every one of them.”
Dimitris felt the cold of the marsh settle into his chest in a way that had nothing to do with temperature.
“Someone let it fail on purpose,” he said.
“Someone is letting it fail on purpose,” Rafael corrected. “Present tense. It’s not finished yet.”
The Thornwell emerged from the mist like a memory of itself—a broken tower, one wall standing at full height while the others had collapsed inward, leaving a jagged silhouette against the grey pre-dawn sky. It had once been a fortress of some significance, and the bones of that significance were still visible in the quality of the stonework, the carved archways that still stood despite the ruin around them, the remnants of iron fittings on doors that no longer existed. Moss covered everything. The marsh had crept up to within twenty feet of the outer wall, and the ground between was soft enough that each step made a sound like a slow exhale.
They tied the horses to the most stable-looking section of outer wall and went in on foot.
The entrance to the foundation chamber was not on Gunnar’s maps. It was Sable who found it—or rather, who stopped in the middle of the ruined great hall, tilted her head in the same way Gunnar tilted his in the marsh, and then walked directly to a section of floor that looked identical to every other section of floor and pressed her palm flat against the stone.
The stone moved.
“How did you know?” Gunnar asked.
“It was colder,” she said, and nothing else, and the slab ground sideways to reveal a staircase going down.
The air below was not cold. It was the opposite of cold in a way that felt wrong—thick and still and faintly sweet, the way a room smells when something has been burning in it for a very long time. The staircase opened into a low-vaulted chamber, and the Binding Stone was there, at its center, and it was immediately apparent that something had been done to it.
