The Offering Stone at Veldrath’s Edge

Denzil came to stand beside her. He looked at the stone with an expression she recognized — the specific exhaustion of someone who has tried to solve a problem by understanding it and discovered that understanding changes nothing.
“I thought freeing them was the right answer,” he said.
“Maybe it is,” Maren said. “But not tonight. And not by theft.” She turned away from the stone. “The carts your merchant lost — they crossed the boundary line. That’s what the path is for. That’s what the offering buys. Safe passage on the road, not through the moor.”
She had worked it out on the second day, but had not said it aloud until now, because some truths need the weight of a resolved moment to carry them properly.
Denzil was quiet for a while as they walked back toward the village lights.
“Will you tell the merchant?”
“I’ll tell him his drivers went off-road,” she said. “And that the road through Veldrath’s Edge is safe, provided you stay on it.”
Behind them, the Varath stood at the boundary of the moor, amber-lit and patient, as it had stood for longer than the village had existed. The offering sat at its base. The bargain held.
Some agreements, Maren thought, were not curses. They were just the shape of living next to something vast and old and hungry, and deciding, year by year, that the cost was worth the peace.
The village lights were warm ahead. She walked toward them and did not look back.
