The door is already humming when we reach it.
Not sound exactly — more like a pressure behind the teeth, a vibration that lives in the jaw and the chest and nowhere else. It stands at the end of the passage, carved from wood so old it has gone black, and it has no handle, no keyhole, no hinge we can see from this side.
Marisol presses her palm flat against it and pulls her hand back fast, like she touched something hot.
“It’s breathing,” she says.
Nobody argues with her.
We have been in the Undercroft of Vassenholm for six hours. We came down through the trapdoor beneath the apothecary on Cutter’s Row, the one Kunal found in the deed records — a deed written in two inks, one of which is not ink at all but something darker, something that smells faintly of copper when you hold it too close to a flame. We came down because Jabari’s sister is somewhere on the other side of this door, and because we are the only ones who know it.
Because we are the only ones who lost enough to matter.
That is what the old woman told us. Esteban found her first, in the market stalls near the canal where the sellers of remedies cluster under green awnings, their wares hanging in bundles — dried roots, stoppered vials, folded paper charms for sleeping and forgetting and warding off the particular grief that comes at three in the morning. She was small and bent and her eyes were the pale silver-grey of old scars, and she told him the door’s name before he even asked the question.
The Lossgate, she called it.
It only opens, she said, for someone who has already paid.
She did not mean money.
Esteban came back to us with the address and with a look on his face like a man who has swallowed something he cannot name. We were sitting in Kunal’s rooms above the glassblower’s workshop, the four of us crowded around a table covered in papers and hand-drawn maps and three empty tea glasses, and when he told us what she said, nobody spoke for a long time.
We all knew what we had lost.
We did not say it out loud. We did not need to.
Marisol lost her voice — not her speaking voice, but the one she used to sing with, the one that had filled the Vassenholm concert hall for eleven years until the night she accepted a commission from a man whose name she later learned was not a name at all but a title, a placeholder for something that fed on sound. She can speak. She cannot sing. The absence lives in her throat like a stone.
Kunal lost his memory of his mother’s face. Not her — she is alive, in the city, three streets away. But the image is gone, wiped clean, the way a chalk drawing is wiped from a board. He can describe her features one by one if someone tells them to him, but when he tries to hold the picture in his mind it dissolves. He has not told her. He sits across from her at Sunday meals and smiles at a face he cannot keep.
Jabari lost his sister to the Lossgate itself — or rather, to whatever is behind it. Nneka went looking for something she would not name, three months ago, and she did not come back, and the door was the last place anyone saw her go. This is why we are here. This is the throughline of everything.
Esteban lost his hands.
Not literally — they are there, attached, functioning. But he was a sculptor once, and the curse that took his talent took it so completely that when he lifts a chisel now, his hands shake as though they have forgotten what certainty feels like. He built things that made people weep. He builds nothing now. He carries the tools still, out of stubbornness, or mourning, or both.
The door hums.
Marisol steps back from it and looks at the rest of us.
“The old woman said one person,” Kunal says. His voice is careful, measured. He is always the one who says the thing nobody wants to hear, and he says it gently, which makes it worse. “One person who has lost. Not four.”
“She said someone who has already lost something,” Esteban says. “She didn’t say how much.”
