The Door Holds. Nothing Else Does.

Miriam walked to the northeast drawer. She used a key she wore on the same chain as her glasses. The map inside was large, hand-drawn on material that was not paper, depicting a geography that corresponded to no coastline in any of the framed prints above — a place of concentric chambers, descending levels, passages labeled in the same cramped script as Snikkle’s coat pockets. It was beautiful. It had taken Miriam most of her career to learn to read a quarter of it. She held it for a long moment.
She gave it to Snikkle.
The goblin treasurer took it with both hands — carefully, with the specific reverence of someone who understands that some objects are worth more than their owners realize and that this fact cuts in multiple directions. It placed the map in the ledger. The ledger closed. The clasp clicked.
The door at the north wall made a sound like a very old lock being turned for the last time, and then it was simply gone. The stone wall was smooth. The crack in the northeast corner was gone too. Even the tree roots under the flagstones had settled.
Snikkle tucked the ledger under its arm and moved toward the main entrance with the brisk efficiency of a professional who has other appointments.
“The receipt,” Rocio said.
Snikkle paused. It reached into one of the labeled pockets and produced a small card, which it handed to her without looking back. Then it left.
The card read: Debt cleared. Archive closed. No further claims on this property or its successors.
Below that, in smaller script: The map was worth more than she knew. She knew anyway. That counts for something, in our ledger.
Miriam sat down at the oak table. She picked up her tea. It had gone cold.
She drank it anyway.
