Mapclaw’s Account of the Wake-Lamp

Marta went next. She was faster, sharper, less comfortable with the ceremony of it, but she did not skip anything. The lamp continued to brighten.
Spyros went last. He was seventeen, and his list was shorter, but he had their grandmother’s eyes, and when he spoke, he included debts the others had not thought to name — owed to the land, owed to the dead, owed to the version of himself he had not yet become. Sera made a small sound, almost approval.
The flame peaked — amber becoming gold, gold becoming something close to white — and then settled. Steady. Shadowless as always, but no longer wrong-feeling. Calm, the way a debt discharged is calm.
The shape in the corner, whatever it had been, was gone.
I will tell you the cost, because a ledger without both columns is just a wish list. Renato paid Rodrigo Camacho the fence debt the next morning, in full, which was not ruinous but was uncomfortable. Marta kept the promise she had broken, which took her six months and cost her a contract she had valued. Spyros was changed in some way none of them could name precisely — quieter, or perhaps more precisely quiet, the way a room is quiet after a long conversation that resolved something real.
The lamp still burns. It sits in the iron box on the Duarte-Costa kitchen shelf, and every year on the autumn anniversary, the three of them sit down together and account for themselves.
Sera watches the road. She is still waiting for someone. I do not know who.
I am Snikkle Mapclaw, and I have updated my map of Torrevell to include a small notation at the north end of the village: here, a threshold. Maintained. The notation is in the footnote, where the important things always are.
