The moment Mara realized the conference room had no door handle on the inside, she also realized she was not alone. Someone had planned this. Someone had planned her.
She had arrived at the Vantage Group offices at 7:14 in the morning, forty-six minutes before anyone else was scheduled to show up. That was the point. As a forensic auditor, Mara worked best in silence, in empty buildings, in the space between suspicion and proof. She had a keycard, a laptop bag, and a court order granting her access to the financial records of one of the most profitable logistics companies in the Pacific Northwest.
The records were in Conference Room C. Third floor. End of the hall.
She remembered swiping her card, hearing the magnetic lock disengage, stepping inside. The room was long and cold, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gray Seattle skyline. A mahogany table. Twelve leather chairs. A wall of filing cabinets along the back. She had set her bag down and turned to check the hallway out of habit.
That was when she saw it. Or rather, did not see it.
The door had no handle on the inside. Just a flat steel plate where the lever should have been. She pressed her palm against it. Solid. She pushed. Nothing moved. She looked for a keycard reader on the interior wall. There was none.
She told herself to stay calm. She had her phone. She would call someone and they would let her out in five minutes and she would feel slightly embarrassed and that would be the end of it.
No signal. Not one bar. She crossed the room to the windows. The glass was thick, the kind that does not open, the kind that exists only to let light in and keep everything else out. Outside, the street was six floors below and completely empty in the early morning fog.
She tried her phone again. Still nothing. She noticed, for the first time, that there was no landline on the table. Conference rooms always had landlines. She had been in hundreds of them.
This one did not.
Mara set her phone face-down on the table and made herself breathe. She was a professional. She assessed situations. She looked for patterns in numbers that other people could not see, and she found the truth buried inside them. She could find a way out of a room.
She started with the filing cabinets. Locked, all six of them, but the locks were cheap. She used the metal spine of her legal notepad to work the first one open in under three minutes. Inside were paper files, dense and organized, going back eleven years. She recognized the company names immediately. Shell corporations. Dozens of them. Addresses in Delaware, in Cyprus, in the Cayman Islands. She had been tracking three of them for four months.
She was not supposed to find these yet. She was not supposed to find them at all, not without a secondary warrant, not without her supervisor present. Someone had put her in this room knowing she would open these cabinets.
The realization landed like cold water.
This was not a trap to keep her from the evidence. This was a trap to make it look like she had stolen it.
She stepped back from the cabinet and looked at the room differently. There was a small black dome in the ceiling corner she had not noticed before. A camera. Its red light was on. It had been recording since the moment she walked in.
Her hands were already on the files.
She set them down carefully and moved away from the cabinet. Her mind was running fast now, the way it did when a balance sheet stopped adding up. Someone inside the company had known she was coming today. Someone had removed the door handle. Someone had killed the cell signal, probably with a portable jammer somewhere nearby. Someone had made sure those files were accessible and that she would be caught on camera accessing them.
If she was found here with those files, her court order would be invalidated. The evidence would be tainted. The entire case would collapse. And she would face criminal charges for improper handling of seized materials.
She had maybe twenty minutes before the building’s regular staff began to arrive.
