From the private correspondence of Archivist Halina Zaitsev, recovered from the ruins of the Vethara Sanctum, dated the forty-third year of the Amber Concordat:
“Do not let them tell you the magic is simply fading. Magic does not fade. It is taken, or it is broken, or it is buried — but it does not leave on its own, like a guest who grew tired of the host. Something has been done to the Binding Stone, and whoever did it knew exactly what they were silencing. I have sent word to Ferrante. If he still has the old maps, we may yet find the chamber beneath the Thornwell. Burn this after reading. Burn it, Dimitris. I mean it.”
The letter had not been burned.
Dimitris Vitali found it tucked inside the lining of Halina’s traveling coat, which was folded on the floor of an empty room in the waystation at Cressmark, three days after she had stopped answering messages. He read it twice, then read it a third time standing at the window, watching frost spread across the glass in patterns that should not have been possible in early autumn. Frost that moved. Frost that seemed, if you stared at it long enough, to be tracing words.
He did not stare long enough to read them.
Rafael Ferrante arrived at Cressmark before nightfall, which meant he had been riding hard since before Dimitris’s message could have reached him. He came with two others: Gunnar Ulvang, a broad-shouldered surveyor whose hands were perpetually ink-stained and who carried the old maps Halina had mentioned rolled in a battered leather tube across his back, and a younger woman named Sable Mourne, who had no official title and who spoke very little. She had pale amber eyes and kept her hands inside her sleeves, which Dimitris noticed but did not comment on.
“You already knew,” Dimitris said to Rafael, when they were inside and the door was bolted.
Rafael set his saddlebag on the table with the careful deliberateness of a man managing his own composure. He was lean and dark-haired, with a sharp face that showed everything and gave away nothing simultaneously. “I knew the Binding Stone had gone quiet three weeks ago,” he said. “I did not know about Halina.”
“The Stone going quiet is not the same as it failing,” Gunnar said. He unrolled the largest of the maps across the table, anchoring its corners with a candlestick, a cup, his own fist, and Sable’s elbow, which she offered without looking up. “Stones go quiet when something is suppressing them. Something deliberate.”
Sable said, quietly, “Or something hungry.”
The silence after that was the kind that sits on a room like a held breath.
The Binding Stone was the oldest piece of worked magic in the kingdom of Vethara. It had been set in the foundation chamber beneath the Thornwell—a fortress now mostly ruined, mostly forgotten, on the northern edge of the Ashfen marshes—at the beginning of the Amber Concordat, when the five founding witches had woven the kingdom’s magical infrastructure into a single anchored lattice. Every ward, every blessed road-marker, every grain-store seal and fever-charm and boundary stone in Vethara drew its sustaining power from that central anchor. Not visibly, not in any way the ordinary people of the kingdom would notice from day to day. But it was there, always, the way a heartbeat is there. You only notice it when it stops.
For three weeks, the heartbeat had been stopping, one small silence at a time.
Door-wards were failing. Fever-charms were going cold. In the village of Ullmark, the boundary stones that kept the marsh-wraiths out had crumbled to ordinary rock, and two children had gone missing before the village elder had the sense to move everyone inside the mill and seal the shutters with iron. The king’s court had issued three separate statements explaining that the situation was “under review” and that there was “no cause for alarm.” The statements had been written by people who, Dimitris suspected, knew exactly what the cause was and had very good reasons for not admitting it.
Halina had known too. And now Halina was gone.
