The flight to Lisbon boarded in forty minutes.
Catarina Nogueira knew this because she had checked her phone four times in the last ten minutes, each glance a small act of self-discipline — a reminder that she had a connection to make, a new city waiting, a life that had been carefully reconstructed around the absence of one particular person. She was sitting at the bar of a wine house built inside a converted chapel on a narrow street above the Douro, and the vaulted stone ceiling still held the memory of prayers, she thought, the way old walls always do. Candlelight moved across the ribbed arches. The smell of aged wood and poured Douro red filled the cool air like something she had loved once and forgotten she still loved.
She had stopped here for one glass. Just one. A small indulgence before the taxi, before the airport, before everything.
Then Sebastian Pembroke walked in.
He did not see her immediately. That was the mercy of it — those three or four seconds where she could simply look at him, absorb the fact of him, the way you absorb unexpected weather. He was taller than she remembered, or maybe she had just spent two years editing him down in her memory until he fit more comfortably inside it. His coat was the same dark navy he had always worn. He pushed his hair back from his forehead the way he always had, a gesture so familiar it landed somewhere behind her ribs.
Then he looked up, and the mercy was over.
“Catarina.”
He said it the way you say the name of something you had given up looking for.
She did not stand. She did not smile, not immediately. She held her wine glass with both hands and let the silence do the work it needed to do. “Sebastian.” A pause. “You look like someone who just walked into the wrong bar.”
He almost smiled. Almost. “I walk into the wrong places all the time. You know that.”
He moved toward her — not quickly, not with any presumption, but with the careful deliberateness of a man who had rehearsed being calm. He gestured at the stool beside her, a question without words, and she answered it by looking away, which he apparently took as permission. He sat. He ordered without looking at the menu, a Quinta do Crasto, which she noticed because it had always been his order, and she noticed because she had always noticed everything about him, which had been the problem.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. The chapel hummed softly around them — the low conversation of two other couples at a corner table, the pour of wine, the faint music drifting from somewhere further in. The candles on the bar threw warm gold light across the stone wall, and Catarina thought, not for the first time, that Porto had a way of making the past feel very close. Like it was just in the next room.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
“Conference. Urban design. Ends tomorrow.” He turned the glass in his hands. “You?”
“Leaving.” She held up her phone. The boarding information glowed on the screen. “Forty minutes.”
“Of course you are.” He said it lightly, but she heard the undertow in it.
Two years ago, Catarina had been a senior architectural photographer based in London, and Sebastian Pembroke had been the new partner at the firm whose projects she had been documenting for three years. She had not known, when she first met him in the open-plan studio, that the desk they had cleared for him was the one directly beside hers. She had not known, when she handed him a coffee she had accidentally made twice, that this was how it would begin. She had not known any of it, which was perhaps why it had worked, for a while — because she had walked into it without armor.
