I take one more look at the chamber before I turn to go. The crystals pulse—slower now, or perhaps I am imagining it, reading intention into physics. The light is gold and amber and the hum is in my chest and the walls shimmer faintly in my helmet light, warm and iridescent and older than the company that tried to own them.
Here is what I understand, walking back up through the corkscrew corridor with a corporate drone at my shoulder:
Cordata owns my loan. They own my contract, my equipment, my bunk, my meal credits, my transit access, and as of today, the next several years of my labor, once the penalties are assessed and added to my balance. They own a great deal of me. I walked into this knowing that, and I walked in anyway, and that is not a small thing to understand about yourself. For four years I filed reports and paid fees and watched the balance never shrink and told myself I was being practical, being patient, waiting for the right moment. There is no right moment when the system is designed to prevent one. You make the moment.
The data is out. It is in the hands of the Outer Reach Academic Consortium, which has no relationship with Cordata and no obligation to honor their discovery claims. Within weeks, researchers will be asking questions Cordata cannot silence. Within months, the existence of this chamber will be a matter of public scientific record. Cordata can sue me into the ground—and they will—but they cannot un-transmit what I sent. They cannot re-seal what is already open.
I owe them years. I have always owed them years. But the chamber is free, and so, in the only way that has ever mattered to me, am I.
