TRANSCRIPT — VOICE MEMO #003
Device: Chioma Asante, personal phone
Recovered: Hatchery Road trailhead, Olympic Peninsula, WA
Date stamp: October 14, 2:07 AM
“Okay. Okay, I’m recording this in case—in case I don’t make it back to the car. The fire was in 2019. I know it was. Everyone knows it was. The ranger station at mile marker eleven burned to the ground, they said, and they closed the whole eastern corridor because nothing was left. I have the closure notice on my phone. I have the news article saved. So somebody needs to explain to me why I am standing outside that station right now, and the lights are on.”
[Recording ends.]
—
The memo was the last thing Chioma had sent before her phone died, uploaded automatically to the cloud through the last bar of signal she’d had at the trailhead. She doesn’t know it uploaded. She doesn’t know anything about that right now, because right now she is moving through the dark between the Douglas firs with her headlamp switched off, navigating by the pale bleed of moonlight through the canopy, and every careful step she places on the wet pine-needle floor feels like a decision she might regret.
She had come to the Olympic Peninsula for the silence. Three days, solo, the kind of trip her colleagues called reckless and her therapist called necessary. She’d done the research, filed the backcountry permit, packed the right gear. She knew the eastern corridor was closed. She’d planned to camp well west of the old boundary marker, nowhere near the burn scar, nowhere near whatever remained of the infrastructure that had gone up in the 2019 fire. The fire had been catastrophic. Lightning strike in a drought year. The ranger station, the equipment sheds, the small fuel depot — all of it gone in under six hours, according to every report she had ever read on the subject.
She had not planned to see the light.
It had appeared at roughly eleven PM, when she was already in her tent, already half-dissolved into the particular exhaustion that comes from eight miles of elevation gain. A pale yellow glow, low and steady, somewhere east through the trees. Not a campfire. Campfires move and breathe. This was a window. She had lain still for twenty minutes telling herself it was her imagination playing with the moonlight, with the way fog pools between old-growth trunks and sometimes catches ambient light and holds it. She is a practical person. She works in emergency response coordination. She knows how the mind manufactures patterns in the dark.
But then she had gotten up.
Now she is forty meters from the station and she can see it clearly: a low, wide building with a metal roof, the forest service green of its painted timber siding gone gray-brown in the moonlight. One window illuminated. The structure is intact. There is no burn damage she can see from here — no char, no collapse, no ghost-skeleton of rafters. It simply stands, solid and unremarkable, as though it has been standing here every day since it was built, as though 2019 never happened at all.
She stops behind a cedar trunk wide enough to hide her entirely and she breathes.
The logical explanations cycle through her in order of likelihood. Reconstruction — possible, but the corridor is still officially closed, she checked the permit system three weeks ago. A squatter using a derelict shell — possible, but the window glass is whole, the roof line is clean. A surveying crew running late — possible, but it’s two in the morning on a Tuesday in October and there are no vehicles anywhere on the access road she crossed to get here. She had looked. She always looks.
A branch cracks somewhere to her left.
She presses flat against the cedar and stops breathing.
