Resnik

Her grandmother, who had never once, in all the years Paloma had known her, explained why she had stopped driving that particular route, or what she had found at the end of a road that wasn’t on any survey, or why she had started wearing, every day until she died, a small cloth-bound notebook around her neck on a cord.
The notebook Paloma had buried with her.
The notebook that, when she tried to remember its cover, had a symbol on it she now recognized.
In the ditch east of Reno, Paloma Mercado looked at the desert horizon and felt Resnik inside her the way the sentence had described — a shape, a weight, a specific temperature. The paramedic took her wrist. She turned and looked at him.
She recognized him because she had seen his face in the ledger. Not his name. His face, sketched in the margin by someone who had been there before her, in ink that was very, very old.
She did not tell anyone this.
She went home. She found her grandmother’s other maps — the ones she had never unfolded because she had assumed they were duplicates. They were not duplicates. They were maps of places that were not on any survey, connected by roads that only appeared to people who were meant to find them, annotated in her grandmother’s careful hand with notes about what was inside each place and what it took from you when you left.
Resnik had taken Gideon.
Resnik had sent her home with its shape inside her, which was, she understood now, how it traveled. How it had always traveled. How it had moved from her grandmother’s chest to hers without either of them knowing the transaction had occurred.
She rolled the maps up carefully and put them in the tube she used for field work.
She did not destroy them.
