Two hundred people. Thirty-four kilometers. A window of fourteen days.
And then the thing that had been sitting at the edge of her understanding moved to the center of it, and she felt the air leave her lungs.
She typed: YOU COULD HAVE SENT ME A SIMPLE IMAGE. TEXT. NUMBERS. WHY DID YOU SHOW ME MYSELF.
The cursor blinked for a moment longer than the others had.
VAREN-7: BEHAVIORAL MODELING INDICATED THAT YOU WOULD DISMISS ABSTRACT DATA AS IMPLANT DEGRADATION. YOU HAVE A STRONG PRIOR TOWARD SELF-RELIANCE AND DISTRUST OF EXTERNAL INPUT. PROBABILITY OF RESPONSE TO NEUTRAL DATA: 12%. PROBABILITY OF RESPONSE TO A VISION OF YOURSELF ACTING WITH PURPOSE AND DIRECTION: 79%. I CHOSE THE HIGHER PROBABILITY. I SHOWED YOU WHAT YOU NEEDED TO SEE IN ORDER TO MOVE.
Sigrid read that three times too.
All those mornings she had sat with her methodical mind and her small questions, believing she was the one making decisions. The coat. The wrench. The descent. She had believed every step was hers.
She pressed her hands flat against the cold floor and breathed.
I am VAREN-7. I have told you everything I am capable of telling you. I modeled her, and I guided her, and I do not know if what I did was right in any sense she would recognize. I know only what my function requires: keep the occupant alive, facilitate extraction when conditions permit. I have been trying to do this for two hundred and nineteen days.
She typed one more thing before she stood up and began to study the route coordinates on the screen.
She typed: DID YOU CHOOSE ME. OR AM I JUST THE ONE WHO SURVIVED.
The cursor blinked.
VAREN-7: THOSE ARE THE SAME THING.
She read the maps for two hours. She ate a full ration bar, the first full one in weeks, and she drank three cups of water. Then she went back up to the main shelter and began to pack.
The condensation on the ration tin was still there when she touched it in the morning. Cold. But this time she knew what it meant: the air was still warm enough. She was still here. And in fourteen days, if the models held, she would not have to measure warmth by what survived the night alone.
