The Ghost‑Cutter

Leila sits in the single chair. She is very still for a long time.
The memory rises again — red soil, violet sky, the child’s hand. She understands now that it is Orlando’s memory. His daughter. His reason. The thing he needed to survive inside a mind that the chip could not reach.
She understands something else, too: the memory feels more real than her own because it is unedited. It is raw human experience, unsmoothed, unflattened, sharp at every edge. Her own memories have been curated so long that they have the texture of corporate literature — clean, purposeful, and missing something essential.
She reaches up and touches the chip behind her ear.
“Can you get it out?” she asks.
“Yes,” Tiago says. “And I can copy what it contains first. Everything Vantara did. Every employee. Every edit. Every timestamp.”
“And then?”
“Then it goes to every independent data network in Dreth simultaneously. They cannot suppress it if it is everywhere at once.”
Leila looks at the red door. She thinks about the forty-fourth floor, the calibrated light, the chair that adjusts to her posture, the eleven years of a life that was always slightly less than she would have chosen.
She thinks: this is the first decision I have made that is entirely my own.
“Do it,” she says.
Tiago works through the night. By morning, the data is everywhere. By morning, Leila Basha is no longer a Tier-2 employee. She is, for the first time, simply herself — unedited, unflattened, and furious in the most clarifying way she has ever felt.
The memory of red soil and a child’s hand remains. She keeps it, not as evidence, but as a reminder of what an unaltered human mind feels like from the inside: vast, and aching, and entirely its own.
