Arturus Meridian wasn’t just running ghost workers to pad payroll numbers. The ghost on the Halverson had been there to move something. Cargo that didn’t exist on any manifest, handled by hands that didn’t officially exist, signed off by a bioscan that belonged to a woman eating noodles six hundred thousand kilometers away. Clean. Invisible. Perfectly corporate.
Federica found the cargo thread by chasing the mass discrepancy backward through six months of Halverson run logs. The unregistered mass always appeared in the same bay. Always moved the same route through the belt. And the destination—the Draven Extraction Platform—had a secondary docking collar that didn’t appear on Arcturus’s public schematics.
We had forty minutes to decide what to do with that information before Arcturus’s security division, which had clearly been watching us since Han walked through our door, came to collect it.
Sigrid made the call. She was already transmitting.
Not to the Korveth Ring authority—Arcturus owned three seats on their oversight board. She sent it to the Intercolony Labor Tribunal, a body that Arcturus had lobbied against for a decade precisely because it was the one institution with jurisdiction they hadn’t yet managed to purchase. The full file. The bioscan mirror architecture. The mass logs. The ghost worker. The secondary docking collar. Meili Takahashi’s verified alibi. Han Cao’s erased resignation.
All of it.
The security team arrived four minutes later. Three of them, in Arcturus gray, with the polished, unhurried manner of people who expected cooperation.
They found Sigrid sitting with her hands folded on the desk, Federica standing by the window with her arms crossed, and me leaning against the door frame with nothing left worth taking.
“The file’s already gone,” Sigrid said. “You’re welcome to the office.”

The Intercolony Labor Tribunal froze Arcturus Meridian’s Korveth operations eleven days later, pending a full audit of their freight crew contracts and bioscan logging systems across fourteen active routes. It wasn’t a death blow to the corporation—corporations like Arcturus didn’t die, they restructured, renamed, and resumed—but it was enough.
The ghost worker was never publicly identified. The Tribunal sealed that portion of the file, citing an ongoing investigation. I had my own suspicion about who it was—someone deep inside Arcturus’s own logistics chain, running their operation from the inside, using the company’s own systems as cover—but I never confirmed it, and I’ve learned not to pull threads I can’t finish.
Meili Takahashi, when we finally sat down with her properly and explained what had been done with her identity, was quiet for a long time. Then she asked if she was going to lose her noodle stall over it.
We told her no.
She seemed to consider that sufficient.
Han Cao surfaced eight weeks later on a settlement called Piers Outpost, which had no extradition agreement with the Korveth Ring authority and, more importantly, no Arcturus franchise operations. He sent a single message—no text, just a confirmation ping. Still alive. We marked him off the list.
Our office lost its Level 9 lease two weeks after the Tribunal filing. Arcturus didn’t send anyone this time. They just let the building’s corporate owner know that our presence was commercially inconvenient, and the lease evaporated. We moved to Level 12, a smaller bay, colder, with a view of the docking arm that groaned every time a freighter locked on.
Sigrid said it had character.
Federica said it had mold.
They were both right. We set up the terminals anyway, and we got back to work.
